IN YOUR AREA (1999)
Things get a bit weird from a live standpoint in this period, as Tim Blake, Huw Lloyd-Langton, Harvey Bainbridge and Simon House drift back in to the periphery of the picture again for some concerts, while newcomers like Captain Rizz (a reggae chanter), Crum (keys) and Jez Huggett (woodwinds) also occasionally appear on stage.
In Your Area returns to the tried and true "semi-live" approach, with six concert cuts (including an obligatory "Brainstorm") featuring the likes of Rizz and Crum, backed by six new studio bits. The core band from the promising Distant Horizons is still intact, so this should result in something good, right?
Sorry to say, but the answer to that question is an emphatic "no." The live cuts on In Your Area are serviceable, but the studio cuts wouldn't necessarily even be recognized as Hawkwind to a reasonably educated listener on first brush, with generally toothless ambient noodling underpinning some truly dire lyrics and vocals. Alas.
