Day 5 - Vegas, Baker & Calico

Waking at the Mirage is a joy... get out of bed, pull on the swimming trunks and wander down to the pool.. today it was crowded as America had a day off, but we got sunbeds, had a swim & ordered Daquiris ... not bad for 8:50 am.. :) we spent an hour or so people watching and catching some rays..

After a shower we hit the road again towards LA on I-15, the road was really really busy with cars heading back to california after their weekend in Vegas, our first port of call was an out of town casino called "Whiskey Petes" where hidden at the back of the gaming room they have the actual car that Bonnie & Clyde were captured in.. it's riddled with bullet holes but not as many as the one Warren Beatty was captured driving in the film of the story...

We'd both been to the Bun Boy at Baker before.. but as it has the world's largest thermometer in its carpark who can resist? not us, so off we went, a photo opportunity and 2 HUGE taco salads later and we were set for the next part of the day, we carried on down I-15 to Calico a commercialised Ghost Town, it was officially closed when we arrived, but they leave the gates open so you can look around, and we spent an hour or so climbing the hill and exploring. it's sad they've restored and added to the remains as it's lost a lot of authenticity, but it's better than the site being razed and replaced with "The Calico gaming house" or something..

A dash back down I-15 returned us to Vegas, a better drive this time as we wern't in heavy traffic, arriving back at 8:45 we parked and went to the movies.. "South Park - bigger, longer & uncut" was our choice.. 5/10, too many songs, not enough plot was the verdict..

That was it for today, we ended up with some food and a drive around the edges of Vegas looking at the smaller casinos and searching for a Sonic Drive-In (we failed.. there are supposed to be 4 here.. but where??) ..tomorrow we do Henderson, Vegas' neighbour.

To Henderson & Beyond.. -S.
