Knock! knock! knock! ......."Bloody hell it`s Debs!"
We`d gotten used to our lazy wake-ups so it was a bit of a shock when Debs turned up on time at "Castle Cleveland" at 10am precisely (as arranged..) ..we sent her off to the Mcdonalds that was in the parking lot and went back to bed.. er got up bushey eyed and shiney tailed. ..or something.
Debs gave us a whistle stop tour of rural Ohio, saw lots of quaint towns and had our fill of Amish land... I like the Amish, and have decided that if I could keep electricity, ditch religion and not wear the silly clothes I`d be one in a shot.. I guess it`s the beards that attract me. (ZZ Fop??)
We got back on the road at about 1pm and commenced the haul to Chicago.. we spent the entire journey looking for a Dennys for brunch.. but to no avail, in the end we had to have generic fast food.. Interstate 80: nil points. ...My kingdom for a Dennys location map..
Pulling into Chicago at about 6pm we had a swift drive through the centre of town and started looking for a Motel for the night.. no luck ..we popped out of the north side of Chicago and decided to take the coast road north which we figured a) might be pretty and b) might have some motels.. naturally we got lost and landed up in deepest no where.. at this point Tamsin spotted a huge K-Mart and pointed out she`d never been in one.. obviously I had to put that right so in we went.. 45 minutes and 3 pairs of shoes later K-mart was conquered.
We had another attempt at finding the coast road, along the way we spotted a Motel with in room Jacuzzis.. cool.. then in the next plaza a Dennys.. double cool! ...the next block served up a Drive-in cinema with 3 screens!! The evening had decided itself! I turned the car around and we booked into the Motel.. on booking in we were offered a water bed at no extra charge! (?)
So the evening started with a feast in my beloved Dennys (looked like a mid 80`s one..) continued in the Drive-in where we saw "Dangerous minds" finaled in the giant Jacuuzi in our bedroom and is encoring (as I write) in a king sized water bed! ....which I`m con vinced will give one of us sea sickness.
Neither of us had ever been to a drive-in before and this was an eye-opening experi ence! excellent atmosphere in the lot (Or whatever you call the main area) a nice warm evening.. good film... totally civilised.
A Dennys, A Drive-in, A Jacuzzi, A Waterbed.. God Bless America!!
