We caught a bus into New York on our own (oooh brave!) and made our way into Grand
Central station where we were due to be met by forum ambassador Andrew F.
...unfortunately we were accosted by some rude New Yorker outside the station who
wanted to know if we`d just come from JFK... hang on.. vaguely Irish accent, green suit,
goatee, preference for round knishes.. ANDREW! Grand Central has a really impressive main concourse... however, it`s ability to entertain waned somewhat during the hour or so Rebecca gave us to study it.. ..as Rebecca is letting us stay in her apartment I have to say that was one of -the- most enjoyable hours of my life oh yus lordy indeed... ahem.. When Rebecca arrived we piled into a taxi and had the New York deli by moonlight experience.. those of us with sweet teeth got stuck into the ice cream, Andrew is a vegetarian (?) though and had a knish (2nd mention.. and I still don`t know what they are.. something to do with potatoes..) We were tired at this point so Rebecca took us home on the subway.. hang on isn`t the NY subway supposed to be covered in grafitti and dangerous? there goes another preconception...

Waking up on a hot Friday morning with Howard Stern on the radio is about as civilised
as you can get... we listened until 10 and made our way into the city.. New York is just like the movies!! despite the fact it was a REALLY hot day there was steam coming out of the manholes!? do they have a man in charge of manhole steam-generation? The subway was overhead just like in the French Connection.. the only thing missing was a car chase.. but hey, this is New York.. one`ll be along in a minute.. right? Tamsin of course had to visit Bloomingdales and Macys.. So we spent a couple of hours walking between the two (Mental note: NY isn`t as small as I thought it was...) We played on the Staten Island ferry - the ONLY way to see the Statue of Liberty and the view of the NY sky-line on the return trip is great!

We had a
tromp around Battery park, snarfed some culture in the Metropolitan Museum of Art...
OK, OK, I`ll come clean, we had a soda in the staff restaurant.. (but were allowed a
quick peep at some armour afterwards..) Can I just point out that during a humid heatwave the NY subway is a blessing! Only now do I appreciate the god-like genius of air Conditioning We took a stroll around the East Village guided by the splendid Rebecca, it was just like Camden Town in London, you can get anything pierced anytime by anyone.. I saw CBGB`s! ...smelt like a legend it did..
