Intro:
Way back before I`d even touched a real electric guitar I used to pore over Musician magazines dreaming of the day I could afford one, my main obsession was the Gibson SG, but I also had weaknesses for a few other oddballs, the Gibson Grabber bass always looked cool in photographs and the Burns Scorpion really appealed to the 15 year old me too.. but there was one guitar I could never work out if I liked or loathed, The Ovation Breadwinner..

I would read the ads for the Breadwinner & be totally convinced by the technology, the tri-mount bridge, the pickups, it was active! the first of it`s kind.. but, just look at the shape? it`s a freak! I couldn`t work out if I loved it or loathed it.

The first Breadwinner I saw in the flesh was a Green sunburst one (maybe a refinish?), it sounded awesome! and just looked the absolute business! it wasn't as big as I`d imagined, and not being the tallest person on earth I decided that I would have one..

15 years later and my level of disposable income has risen to the point where I can afford to indulge myself like this, so I kept half an eye on guitar shops & ebay until one day I saw a very cool looking black/grey sunburst model, four hundred pounds later & it was mine! It came in its original (Brown) Ovation fitted flight case & lives up to it's reputation in every way.

Once I`d been playing the guitar a couple of days I started to look on the web for definite info about it`s age etc.. and surprisingly there was nothing.. so, to save the next person having to do all the searching I did I`ve compiled this page, it has every photo/article that I could find on the net which mentioned Breadwinners, I`ve included a few things about the Deacon, the Breadwinners upscale brother, but mainly we're here to talk breadwinners.

Feel free to email me pictures of & stories about your guitar, I don`t know that much about the thing and well, you know how guitarists like to talk nonsense about their babies....
